Baker County is a primarily rural area. Its largest industries by employment are trade, transportation & utility; public administration; and construction. Major private sector employers for Baker County include Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital & Healthcare, Ray's Nursery, Macclenny Nursing & Rehab Center, and Earthworks of Northeast Florida, Inc. A lightly-inhabited county, Baker has thousands of acres available for outdoor recreation, including the John M. Bethea State Forest. Partially within Baker County, Osceola National Forest is a destination for hunters as well as a historical center for logging and turpentine. Baker County has a trail within the forest connecting historic sites related to the Seminole Indians.

The major tourist attraction in Baker County is the Olustee Battlefield. Olustee was the site of the only major American Civil War battle in the state of Florida. The site include a walking trail and a visitor center. Every February, reenactors visit the site, and tens of thousands visit to see them.

Despite being a rural county, there is little commercial agricultural production. Baker County ranks number 51 among Florida counties for number of cattle and calves. The eastern portions of the county are growing as bedroom communities for Jacksonville, especially the county seat of Macclenny with its location on I-10 and US 90.
