Abundant wildlife gives ample opportunities for viewing, hunting, and fishing. The Bayard Conservation Area, on the west bank of the St. Johns River, provide similar opportunities. The north-central portion of the county, adjacent to the Westside neighborhood of Jacksonville, is the Branan Field Mitigation Park Wildlife and Environmental Area, a wildlife conservation zone specifically focused on gopher tortoises.
