Polk County is part of the Tampa Bay region of Florida along with Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Sarasota counties. A mining and railroad town, Lakeland has steadily grown since its 1885 incorporation. Home to around 100,000 people, Lakeland is the headquarters for Saddle Creek Logistics and Fortune 500 supermarket chain Publix. Lakeland also hosts Florida Polytechnic University, Southeastern University, Florida Southern College, and campuses of Polk State College and Webster University.
