Major private sector employers include Home Shopping Network, Fidelity Information Services, Nielson Media Research, Raymond James Financial, and Tech Data Corp. Public employers are Pinellas County School District, Pinellas County Government, City of St. Petersburg, and Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Though economic activity revolves around a variety of aquaculture harvesting, including fishing and shrimping, sponge diving and its legacy are what the city is known for.
