The county lies on a peninsula across Tampa Bay from Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa. Pinellas counts over 900,000 people in its population. The city of Tarpon Springs was largely settled by Greeks and is currently the city most heavily populated by people of Greek ancestry in the U.S. Tarpon Springs is a major center of sponging. Though economic activity revolves around a variety of aquaculture harvesting, including fishing and shrimping, sponge diving and its legacy are what the city is known for.
