The seat of St. Lucie County is Fort Pierce. The city's location near the Indian River Lagoon makes it a prime spot for researchers who are interested in the most biologically diverse estuary in the nation. Both the Smithsonian Marine Station and Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution.
