Miami Beach is a resort city located on a series of barrier islands located between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.  The city's main economic driver is tourism and it has a population of approximately 88,000.  The city's origins lie in the 1870 purchase of the land by Henry and Charles Lum.  The land was purchased for 25 cents an acre and its development continued in the following decades with the planting of coconut, avocado, and various other fruit plantations.  Chartered in March 1915, Miami Beach became a city in 1917.
