Miami Beach is a resort city located on a series of barrier islands located between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The city's main economic driver is tourism and it has a population of approximately 88,000. The city's origins lie in the 1870 purchase of the land by Henry and Charles Lum. The land was purchased for 25 cents an acre and its development continued in the following decades with the planting of coconut, avocado, and various other fruit plantations. Chartered in March 1915, Miami Beach became a city in 1917.

South beach is the biggest and most populous neighborhood in Miami beach. It has a population of approximately 39,000. South Beach is known for its status as a popular entertainment destination, as it is home to many upmarket restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs. South Beach's major thoroughfare, Ocean Drive, is the center of the famous Miami Art Deco district. The road starts at Miami Beach's southernmost point, South Pointe Park, and runs north through the city stopping at 15th street.
Mid-Beach is Miami Beach's smallest and least populous section, home to about 10,000 people. The area is mostly residential, and its most notable neighborhoods include Oceanfront, Bayshore, and Nautilus. Mid-Beach is known for being home to a series of high-end houses known as millionaire's row.
The northernmost section of Miami Beach, North Beach, is home to approximately 28,000 residents. North Beach's most populous neighborhood, Isles of Normandy, is located on the eastern shore of Biscayne Bay. It has a population of approximately 9,000. Other neighborhoods located in this section of the city include Biscayne Pointe and La Gorce.
Miami Beach is among the fastest growing cities in the US. Its location and residents have created a subculture unique to Miami Beach and distinct from that of Miami. Spanish is a first language for more than half of Miami Beach's citizens, as 53% of the city's population is made up of Latin American immigrants and their descendants. Non-hispanic caucasians account for about 40% of the population and the remaining 7% of the population is made up of African and Aisian Americans, as well as mixed raced citizens.

Of these 3.32% are of Mexican origin, 6.96% Puerto Rican, 37.79% Cuban and 51.91% are of other Hispanic or Latino origin.
There are 67,499 housing units in Miami Beach. 20,331 (30.1%) of these were reported as vacant in the 2010 Census. Miami Beach is a tourist destination, 58.9% (11,988) of it's vacant housing units were classed as seasonal, recreational or for occasional use. Miami-Dade County
Miami-Dade County is part of the southeast Florida region along with Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, and Monroe counties. Miami Dade County has 35 cities and incorporates many different geographical areas. The north, central, and east regions are heavily urbanized, with many large skyscrapers and a dense population. The southern region of Miami-Dade County is sparsely populated and is the heart of Miami-Dade's agricultural economy. PortMiami acts as one of the largest cruise spots in the world. Miami International Airport is one of the busiest ports of entry for foreign travelers and handles the most international air cargo of any airport in the country.
Miami-Dade is also a major tourist destination, especially in the city of Miami Beach. The historic 1920s Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive are well-known landmarks, many of which have historic designations. Visitors enjoy the warm weather, sandy beaches, and nightlife of South Beach. It is also a major convention destination. The annual Art Basel Miami and its satellite fairs bring the foremost art collectors to South Beach and the Miami neighborhood of Wynwood.
Miami-Dade County is home to numerous large universities including the private University of Miami, public Florida International University, and Catholic Barry University. The county is also home to historically-black Florida Memorial University and Miami Dade College, the second-largest public university in the nation by enrollment. The Miami-Dade County Public School System is the fifth-largest in the nation.
