Sarasota County is part of the Tampa Bay Region along withManatee, Polk, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties. Sarasota County consists of the cities of Sarasota, Venice, and North Port, and the Town of Longboat Key. The county is home to over 375,000 people.
Top industries are education and health services, leisure and hospitality, retail trade, and professional and business services. Targeted sectors are clean technology/green business, film/entertainment, life sciences, light manufacturing, and sports/ ecotourism.
Sarasota County has three higher education facilities: New College of Florida, University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, and Ringling College of Art and Design. Public sector employers for Sarasota County include the School Board of Sarasota County, Sarasota County Government, and Sarasota Memorial Hospital. At the south end of the county is North Port, a master-planned community that was incorporated in 1959. The 75-square-mile city is home to more than 50,000 people and growing. The city is primarily a bedroom community.
Home to just over 50,000, Sarasota is the county seat. Once the winter home of the famed Ringling Brothers Circus, two of the Ringling brothers invested in Sarasota, establishing a cultural scene stronger than what would be expected of a city its size. The economy is diversified, strong in healthcare and administrative services. Boar?s Head Provision Company is headquartered in the city.
