Saint Augustine is the oldest continually-inhabited city established by a European in the United States, St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spaniard Pedro Menendez de Aviles. Now a national monument managed by the National Parks Service, the Castillo de San Marcos was completed in 1695 and guarded Spanish shipping lanes for almost a century. St. Augustine served as the capital of East Florida until the United States took possession, which moved it to Tallahassee in 1824.

In the 1880s, Henry Flagler, who built his fortune with Standard Oil, arrived in St. Augustine and began purchasing and organizing the railroads, founding the Florida East Coast Railway. In St. Augustine he built two luxury hotels for those railroad passengers to stay at and enjoy the city and its weather. 

St. Augustine is the seat of St. Johns County, one of the original counties organized in Florida. The city is home to over 12,000 and the area is inhabited by more than 60,000.  Tourism and healthcare drive St. Augustine's economy. St. Augustine is a popular destination because of its history, beaches, and abundance of nearby golf courses.

St. Augustine's higher education facilities include Flagler College, which occupies one of the luxury hotels built by Henry Flagler, the Ponce de Leon. The newest campus of St. Johns River State College is located just outside of the city. Also in the city is the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, which provides secondary and post-secondary educations.

Saint Augustine is in North Eastern Florida. It's population as recorded in the 2010 Census was 12,975. Saint Augustine is approximately 36 miles from Jacksonville (population 821,784) and around 22 miles from Palm Coast (population 75,180).

The median age for residents of Saint Augustine is 42.6. Around 17.3% of Saint Augustine households include school aged children and 30.6% of households include individuals aged 65 years or over. Census records indicate 84.1% of the Saint Augustine population are White, 11.6% are Black or African American, .4% American Indian, 1.2% Asian and 1.6% are Two or more Races.

There are 6,978 housing units in Saint Augustine. 1,235 (17.6%) of these were reported as vacant in the 2010 Census. Saint Augustine is a tourist destination, 27.7% (343) of it's vacant housing units were classed as seasonal, recreational or for occasional use. There are 2,955 residential rental units in Saint Augustine. 2,613 of them were occupied in 2010 providing a residential rental vacancy rate of 10.6%.
