St. Lucie County is part of the southeast Florida region along with Broward, Indian River, Miami-Dade, Martin, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties. Incorporated areas for St. Lucie County are Fort Pierce (county seat), Port St. Lucie, and St. Lucie Village. Additionally, Mann Research Center is a 150-acre research park. Known for its golf, the city hosts three PGA tour courses that are open to the public.

The seat of St. Lucie County is Fort Pierce. The city's location near the Indian River Lagoon makes it a prime spot for researchers who are interested in the most biologically diverse estuary in the nation. Both the Smithsonian Marine Station and Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution.
