Putnam County is part of the northeastern region of Florida, along with Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, St John's, and Flagler counties. Putnam County is an industrial rural community. The top industries by employment for Putnam County are government; trade, transportation & utilities; education & health services; and manufacturing. Putnam County's major private sector employers are Georgia Pacific, Putnam Community Center, Wal-Mart, Precision Response Corporation, and Seminole Electric Corporation. Palatka is the principal center of the Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses Putnam County. The city of over 10,000 lies on the St. Johns River. In addition to being a port, Palatka is home to manufacturing centers operated by Georgia Pacific and Veritas Steel.

The county has a number of natural areas for recreation, including the northeastern section of Ocala National Forest, Etoniah Creek State Forest, Rice Creek Conservation Area, Horseshoe Point Conservation Area, the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, and Dunns Creek. The county includes over 175 miles of state-certified canoe paths. Palatka can also lay claim to a Ravine Gardens State Park, created in the 1930s. Palatka and the town of Interlachen both have arts & culture activities, including museums and galleries, wildlife observatories, and historic sites.

Forestry is the most important part of the agricultural industry in Putnam County. Timber consumes more land than any other agricultural product. Farms in the county produce crops including potatoes, cabbage, and poultry. Like other places in Florida, cattle ranching and citrus harvesting are also important agricultural activities.
